Oldest nearly complete pre-human species yet found.
Ardipithecus ramidus lived ~ 4.4 million years ago in what is now Ethiopia.
Ardipithecus ramidusFunctional Anatomy:
Ardi walked upright.
Teeth resemble modern human teeth more closely than chimpanzee teeth.
The teeth structure suggest Ardipithecus was probably an omnivore - eating anything that it could find.
Feet were capable of grasping, similar to chimps, enabling them to climb in trees.
Small back to Ardi's skull, indicating they have a small brain.
Ardipithecus ramidusFossil Record:
Ardipithecus bone fragments came from a layer of rock beneath the Afar region of Ethiopia.
The Afar region is now desert, though it was a woodland 4 million years ago.
Ardipithecus ramidus is 1.2 million years older than Lucy (Australopithecus afarensis).
The oldest fossil identified as a hominid, Sahelanthropus tschadensis, dates between 6 million and 7 million years old (but this is based on a few pieces of the Sahelanthropus skull)
Orrorin tugenensis, is another hominid species which is 6 million years old (though this is represented by little more than a leg bone).
