A recent Science Museum poll (2009) has named the X-ray machine as the most important invention in the history of science.
Nearly 50,000 people voted on a shortlist of ten inventions & discoveries.
The X-ray machine came out as the clear winner with 9,581 votes.
X-rays were discovered in November 1895, by Wilhelm Röntgen a German physicist.
He subsequently received the Nobel Prize for this discovery.
