  • Gertrude died in Los Angeles (age of 115 years) of suspected heart failure.
  • She attributed her long life to healthy lifestyle and religious belief.
  • Lived at Western Convalescent Hospital for her last years.
  • Her grandparents were slaves.
  • Worked as a maid in Ohio State University dormitories until her retirement.
  • Reported to be the oldest ever African-American voter when she voted for US President Barack Obama (November 2008).
  • Gertrude was presented with a certificate, from Guiness World Records, stating that she was the oldest person in the world on her 115th birthday.
